Marie Award winner Justice Robert Brown

The Marie Award Board of Directors is pleased to announce that the 2012 Marie Award will be presented to Justice Robert L. Brown.

Justice Robert L. Brown sits on the board of directors for The Marie. He has been honoring community service in this way since 2008. Justice Brown has many connections with the Spitzberg family. He attended high school with Irving Spitzberg and their time at Columbia in New York overlapped.

Justice Brown spoke at The Marie event when Trinity Episcopal and Bethel AME Church were honored. He was then asked to join the board. Justice Brown currently serves on the Arkansas Supreme Court. He graduated from the University of the South, Magna Cum Laude, in 1963. Justice Brown went on to graduate school at Columbia University and graduated in 1965 with a masters in English and Comparative Literature. In 1968, he graduated from the University of Virginia law school.

Reading through Justice Brown’s resume is impressive. He started his career in the general practice of law with Chowning , Mitchell, Hamilton and Burrow. He then went on to become the Deputy Prosecuting Attorney with the Prosecuting Attorney’s office for the Sixth Judicial District.

Justice Brown then became the Legal Aide to Governer Dale Bumpers followed by the Legislative Assistant to Senator Dale Bumpers in Washington, DC. He stayed in Washington, DC and worked as the Administrative Assistant to Congressman Jim Guy Tucker. Before becoming Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court he worked in the General Practice of Law under the name Harrison and Brown, P.A. and then Robert L. Brown, PA.

Justice Brown has a published book, articles and many published legal writings. He works with various legal associations and has made many important opinions. Justice Brown has received many awards and has participated in multiple bar activities. He has experience in teaching a Bar Review Course for Lawyers and a National Government Course. Justice Brown has trial court experience as a special Judge for Pulaski County Circuit Court. Through the years he has served in many community service positions. Justice Brown resides in Arkansas with his wife Charlotte. They have one son, Stuart Brown, and two grandchildren, Annabel and Banks Brown that live in Dallas, Texas. Justice Brown’s father, an episcopal bishop, was part of the 1957 crisis.

Charlotte Brown knew Marie Spitzberg well. Mrs. Brown helped to raise money for the institute of Aging where Mrs. Spitzberg received her medical care for many years.

Justice Brown is working on the next Marie Award theme – the crippling effect of prescription drugs. Little Rock, Arkansas ranks high in prescription drug abuse.
